In Which Grace Dresses Up As Mother Nature

Since it's Halloween week at dance, Grace and her friends decided to do a different theme each day. Today they are going as holidays. Grace chose Earth Day, and thus thus simple yet perfect costume was born! The nest and the bird that make up her headband are two of the first needle felted projects she did years ago! xo

Happy Earth Day!

I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.

And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.

That's why we
Celebrate this day.
That's why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is one of our most favorite days ever. And to honor this day we always try to find something to do. We usually read some lovely Earthy books and then take a walk around our neighborhood to spruce it up. This year, in Grace's quest to earn all three of the Daisy Journey badges before she bridges to Brownies, she decided to do her Clover project on Earth Day."Mama, I want to make a banner to hang up for the neighbors to see and then we can clean up the street." Sounded like a good idea to me so we got out the supplies and the girls got to work.
Thank goodness for blue painters tape! The girls did such a great job on the banner and it looked just perfect hung up on our fence! Once the banner was hung it was off to spruce up the neighborhood!  The girls collected two bags of stuff before we headed in for lunch and quiet time. What a great idea for her Clover project and what a lovely way to honor Mother Earth on this glorious (albeit chilly) Earth Day!

Earth Day

"Earth, so big, and me, so small- Oh, what good can I do?"  Funny you should ask, my child.  The world's been waiting for you!"
-One Child, One Planet by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn
We planted the wildflower seeds that Hannah sent us for Earth Day!
There was lots of outside time, of course!
And no Earth Day is complete without a little neighborhood clean up!
While everyday in our family is Earth Day, we never miss a chance to celebrate a wonderful holiday either! Earth Day is easily one of our most favorite, and as the girls have gotten older it's been fun to see them grow into quite the little conservationists!  They truly do not understand why anyone would ever leave their trash to harm Mother Earth and Mother Nature (and neither do I)!

One final thought in regard to Earth Day (as found on the front of the seed packets given out at Mario Batali's restaurant):

"Dear Earth,
We are sorry.
We are working on it.
Please be patient a little while longer.
We think the world of you. Love, The Human Race."

Happy Earth Day!

In a family who strives to live as green and sustainably as possible, Earth Day, is like a major holiday. I had intended to come up with some really great doings to celebrate this wonderful day, but due to some unforseen circumstances (read:  having to buy a new car) things have been a little crazy around here the last couple of days.

I picked up a book, One Child, One Planet, last night, to add to our family library.  We started our celebration today by readying this beautifully photographed book.

Then we headed outside to pick up litter around our neighborhood.

Our neighborhood is very clean,
but with some searching we were able to find some items to pick up.

After we were done beautifying the neighborhood,
the girls headed into the yard to make mudpies.

And of course, it wouldn't be an Earth Day celebration without
"Earth Day Soup, Mama!"

Happy Earth Day, Dear Friends!

Even the "blooming blooms" were celebrating today!

With any luck, we'll see you tomorrow.
