Fun With Candy Hearts!

The other day as I was strolling through Wegman's getting a few things that we needed I came upon those sweet little boxes of candy hearts. Instantly I was transported back to being a student (and then a teacher) playing with these little candy hearts during Valentine's Day.  I put a few boxes in my cart knowing full well how much the girls would love using them count with, make graphs with (something we had not done before) and make patterns with.
Grace's box contained 34 candy hearts.
Emma made several rows of candy hearts with hers.
We had never done anything with graphs before so this seemed like the perfect time to do so. The girls really got into this. They loved seeing which had the most, which had the least and who had more of which color.
They were so into this that you could have heard a pin drop!
Afterward we made patterns with the hearts. Patterns are something that they have always loved so I knew that they'd love to use their candy hearts to make them.

We also chatted about different ways to divide the hearts up and even and odd numbers. Grace picked up even and odd super quickly. Give her a couple of examples and she's good to go. Oh, how I love that!

I am so glad that I stumbled upon those little boxes of candy hearts. It was so much fun to get to watch the girls enjoy doing these activities as much as I did when I was their age. As I always say, you can never go wrong with a classic!
