Welcoming Autumn

Yellow the bracken,
Golden the sheaves,
Rosy the apples,
Crimson the leaves,
Mist on the hillsides,
Clouds grey and white,
Autumn, good morning,
Summer, good night!
-Traditional Waldorf verse

It's felt like autumn arrived a few weeks ago around here as there has been a delightful crispness in the air for awhile already. Apples, pumpkins and cider are appearing at local farms and farmers markets and stores, and we're starting to make plans about what needs to get done before winter's arrival. With the arrival of autumn the nature table has been switched over (it's our tradition to switch it over on the solstices or equinoxes). The summer gnome (made by my dear friend Kim over at Mothering with Mindfulness) has been put away and the sweet autumn acorn gnome she made for us has been brought out of his resting place. The Autumn book by Gerda Muller was ordered (and received) and our front door decoration has gone from our bunny welcome sign to a lovely cluster of Indian Corn.

There is just something so magical about the season of autumn, isn't there? Growing up in New England (and living here still) I think I took autumn for granted until the last handful of years. Had I not, I do think that Dave and I would have been married in October rather than August, if for no other reason than the amazing weather and sheer beauty of the trees in all their autumnal splendor! It's safe to say that October has become my favorite color ('cause really, is there anything more gorgeous?)!

We're looking forward to all that this splendid season has in store for us, dear friends. We wish you a lovely autumn, too. May it be full of magic, love and many blessings. Welcome, autumn! We're so glad you've returned. xo

  3. Love that verse! I've written it down. And the little acorn hat on the gnome is so sweet. I wanted to recommend a lovely little autumn book for your daughters if they haven't already read it...it's The Autumn Story, one of the Brambly Hedge stories by Jill Barklem. I just read it to my daughter last night and she absolutely loved it (so did I). I hope you and your family have a lovely autumn!

    1. Isn't that just the perfect addition for an autumn gnome! Kim really outdoes herself with these gnomes that she makes us! Thanks for the book recommendation! I'm going to add it to our Amazon Wish List right now! I've heard good things about the Brambly Hedge but we have yet to read any (surprisingly)! Have a lovely autumn too, my friend! xo

  4. Your table is lovely, simplicity and elegance all rolled into one. I also have Gerda Muller books and love them. They live in a seasonal book basket for my wee one.

    1. Thank you so much appleshoe! It's pretty much one of my most favorite spots in our house! And aren't those books just the sweetest?! We gave Emma the spring one in her Easter basket and have added one every season since. She'll be given the last one in time for Winter Solstice! xo

  5. Hi Friend- I am looking at your blog looking for nature table ideas...I've been working on our rhythm of the day for when school starts and one of the ideas I've fallen in love with is the concept of lighting the candle at the nature table and then saying the morning verse. As soon as I heard "nature table" I headed straight for your blog! I remembered you have always had a nature table!! xx
