On New Year's Eve

Emma spent the majority of her New Year's Eve getting the deck cleared and gathering the bits of our pulverized Bird Buddy collected. Once she had the branches cut down and piled she called me to come see how much she had cleared. It was then that I decided to take a closer look at the damage that had occurred as a result of the wind taking the tree down. Seeing the chicken coop brought tears to my eyes. It's truly incredible that none of the hens were hurt or injured with how much damage the coop sustained. The goal now, in addition to continued clean up is to get the coop repaired so that we can bring the hens home from the Miele's house. We are so incredibly grateful to them for taking our small flock in.
Art by Jennifer Vallez pretty much sums up how I felt out this year (outside of this house that is).

It wouldn't be New Year's Eve if we did not have Chinese food for dinner, review the goals we had set for the year that was ending (we did pretty good!) and set out intentions/goals for the coming year. Here's to hoping that the chaos of 2025 stays in 2025 and that with the arrival of 2026 compassion, kindness and a just world for all arrive with it. xo

New Year's Eve Eve

At 5:00pm David and I were jolted awake by an incredibly loud noise. He sprang out of bed and looked out our window to see that a giant tree had fallen and injured the chicken coop. He immediately headed downstairs and outside, while I woke up the girls since this was an all hands on deck kind of situation. Emma headed outside just as quickly as David did and began collecting the hens. Grace remained inside to receive each hen as she was brought in and I took to documenting the events that had occurred as well as started to figure out if/where we could find a coop for the hens in New England in the winter. Twenty-twenty five is just not going out easy. xo

Poppy

Miss Poppy
May 2020-August 2025

We said good-bye to the second to last member of our OG flock. Miss Poppy was such a sweetheart and lived and incredible five years! We will miss her so very much. Brownie (who really should be named Goldie) is now the last OG standing. Lead the flock well, Brownie. Make Poppy proud! xo

The Need For Winter

Some of the hens have started laying again. A true sign that climate change is real and an important reason why we need actual winter/actual seaswons. Winter is intended to be a time of rest for all living beings, and is so important for our sweet hens as a lot of energy and effort goes into creating an egg a day. They need winter, and so do we. Winter is supposed to be a time of conserving energy/going inward. A time of rest an renewal so that when spring comes every living being is ready for the rebirth that comes with it. xo

And Then There Were Four

Today we said good-bye to our sweet Amelia. Our hearts are broken and our flock definietly has an Amelia sized hole in it. Sleep well, sweet hen. We'll see you on the flipside. xo

Yesterday In The Snow

The hens are not fans of "the scary, white stuff" but they do seem to love a good taboggan ride! xo
